Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics, and Profitability of Steers Sired by Terminal vs. Maternal Bulls

چکیده
Steer progeny (n = 80) produced by mating British crossbred females to one of three terminal (Charolais) sires or one of five maternal (Angus or Red Angus-Composite) sires were evaluated from birth to harvest to compare the effects of sire type (terminal vs. maternal) on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and net return per head. Steers sired by terminal bulls were heavier (P < 0.05) at most stages of production from birth to harvest, and grew faster (P < 0.05) from birth to weaning compared with steers sired by maternal bulls. Feed intake was greater (P < 0.05) for terminal-cross steers, but feed conversion and cost of gain during finishing were not affected by sire type. Carcasses of steers sired by terminal bulls were heavier (P <0.05) than carcasses from steers sired by maternal sires, however, carcass grade traits did not differ between the two groups. Profitability of the two groups was compared using two different marketing scenarios. In the first scenario, which simulated selling calves at weaning, progeny of terminal sires would have generated more (P <0.05) gross revenue and $39.52 more net return per head than did calves sired by maternal bulls. In the second scenario, which involved retained ownership through harvest, terminalcross calves generated more (P < 0.05) gross revenue per head than did maternal-cross calves and returned an average of $83.66 more net revenue per head than did maternal-cross calves.

Effects of sire growth potential, growing-finishing strategy, and time on feed on performance, composition, and efficiency of steers.
Beef production systems that increase use of unharvested forages and use animals with greater potential for gain affect age and size of animals placed on a finishing regimen. This experiment was conducted to evaluate effects of genetic potential for gain, age at the start of a finishing period, and time on feed on composition, quantity, and quality of beef produced and efficiency of production ...

Recently, high prices have driven producers to replace corn partially or totally with more affordable ingredients. A total of 1,256 DNA-validated progeny from Angus (n = 241), Simmental (n = 599), Simmental × Angus (SA; n = 296), and 75% Simmental (75S; n = 120) sires were used to evaluate the effects of feedlot nutrition and sire breed on the performance, carcass characteristics, and rates of ...

An economic evaluation of feedlot performance ofCharolais and Limousin sired steers and heifers is presented in Table 4. Feed costs, overhead costs and carcass sale value were based on prevailing prices for January 7, 1980. Limousin sired steers retu...

Carcasses from 59 steers produced from the mating of Braford, Simbrah, Senepol, and Simmental bulls to Brahman- and Romana Red-sired cows and Brahman bulls mated to Angus cows were used in this study. Effects of sire breed and feeding calves vs yearlings on fat depots in the chuck, when steers were fed to 1.0 cm external fat, were determined. Breed of sire and feeding calves vs yearlings had no...

The objective was to determine the effects of a recombinant fusion protein anti-GnRH vaccine on testicular development, feedlot performance, and carcass quality of beef bulls.
